Eight Juneau Nursing Students Graduate, Dec 13
The eight Juneau based graduates are part of a group of 50 AAS in Nursing students state wide who have completed their studies. The other sites promoting students along with Juneau are Fairbanks, Homer, Mat-Su, Valdez, Kotzebue and Ketchikan.

At the next Evening at Egan, author, academic and activist Riki Ott shares the long ranging effects of the Exxon Valdez oil spill two decades later. Her talk, “The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill IMPACT: on Ecology and Community” is Friday, October 9, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the Egan Library.

UAS joins Juneau Icefield Research Program 2009
University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) faculty Cathy Connor and Matt Heavner provided local Southeast Alaska information, mentored students, and collected snow data near the Taku Glacier / Mendenhall Glacier divide. The 2009 JIRP students are earning UAS Environmental Science Program credit for their research this summer.

Summer Science for 10-12th Graders - Design Discover Research, June 20-July 2
What does Glacier Bay teach us about warming climate and the landscape and habitat changes that result? What does the work of a marine or fisheries biologist involve? Students entering grades 10-12 have the chance to find out by doing college level field research for college credit this summer through a partnership between the University of Alaska Southeast and Springboard, a program of the Juneau Economic Development Council, and funded by the Department of Defense.

Annual Juneau Native Graduation Celebration, May 2
More than 38 Alaska Natives are graduating from UAS’ three regional campuses in Juneau, Ketchikan and Sitka. Nearly 14 percent of UAS students are Alaska Native. Over the past five years, an average of 10 percent of UAS graduates have been Alaska Native. Graduates represent Certificate, Associate, Bachelor, and Master programs.

Greens Creek and Couer Alaska Offer Jobs to UAS Mining Certificate Holders
The five-week course included environmental and safety training, history of local mining, classroom instruction on the extraction and production process in an underground mine and on-site training in procedures such as installing pipes and jack leg drilling at the Maggie Kathleen entrance to the old Alaska Juneau Mine. How to be good employee, team work, identification of proper supplies, some heavy equipment operation, how to identify and mitigate loose ground conditions and light signals used for communication underground were also addressed.

The program includes Beethoven's "Spring" Sonata, Op. 24 in F Major, for Violin and Piano, Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14, Op. 27, No. 2 "Moonlight" and Schubert Fantasie in F minor for Four Hands, D.940 (Op. 103) as well as Conversations on Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue.

National Science Foundation Extends Grant for UAS Tlingít Language Revitalization Project
The $450,000 grant continues a five year project that began with a $360,000 grant in 2007. The NSF “Documenting Endangered Languages” initiative includes the recording and documentation of spontaneous Tlingít conversation, bilingual annotation of the recordings and the archiving of hundreds of audio tapes of Tlingít oratory, narratives, and celebrations.

According to the agreement, which was signed on February 13th, 2009, selected students who are successful in UAS’ Power Technology Diesel/Heavy Duty Emphasis program, will be given preferential entry into the workforce at Coeur Alaska’s Kensington Mine.

Troll will be at the Auke Lake campus all week, working on two of three projects commissioned by UAS: the salmon on the staircase and a 12-foot wide humpback whale mandala mural on an upper wall.

Anóoshi Lingít Aaní Ká: Russians in Tlingit America, The Battles of Sitka 1802 and 1804, by the Dauenhauers and the late Lydia Black of Fairbanks was one of 14 winners of the Before Columbus Foundation's 28th annual awards held on December 28, 2008.
