Fisheries Technology

The associate of applied science degree is a two-year degree awarded in a specific career or occupational field of experience. Residency requirement is 15 UAS semester credits.

The Associate of Applied Science degree provides students with a broad educational and practical foundation in the field of fisheries technology. Students will be prepared for entry level employment in federal and state agencies, hatcheries, and the private sector.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS (2012-2013 CATALOG)

The AAS in Fisheries Technology requires a minimum of sixty credit hours and a GPA of 2.5. Of the 60 credits, students must complete 20 credits at the 200 level or above. Students must earn 6 credit hours of internship.

CAREERS IN FISHERIES

Fisheries Technicians work in a wide variety of fields and for a wide variety of agencies, both private and public. Potential positions include fisheries technician, fish culturists, field biologist, fishery observer, fish and wildlife surveyor, habitat restoration technician, stream surveyor, harvest management assistant, hatchery technician, and water quality technician.

Annual entry-level salaries range from $20,000 to $35,000 depending on location and position.

Since many fisheries technology positions are seasonal, graduates should keep in mind that salaries may vary significantly. Agencies often looking for employees include State Department of Fish and Game; US Fish and Wildlife, Hatcheries, native corporations and aquiculture business ventures.
