Symbol imagery is the ability to visualize the identity, number, and sequence of sounds and letters in words. Readers with the strong sensory cognitive function of symbol imagery can decode, spell, have word recognition, and read fluently. This course teaches participants to use the See Stars Reading Program to move students through a series of symbol imaging steps from single consonants and vowels to multisyllabic words and lastly, contextual reading, to develop the imagery-language connection for competency in written language. A discussion of the concept of symbol imagery and the steps involved in teaching the process provides students with a foundation for using the Seeing Stars Reading Program in their classroom. Class work is based on working with resource materials, guided practice of teaching the steps, and reflection of teaching symbol imagery in their own classroom. The course also examines a possible scope and sequence of using the Seeing Stars Reading Program in grades K-5, creating a Seeing Stars implementation plan, and creating Seeing Stars lesson book.
