Special Education

The Master of Education (MEd) in Special Education program prepares teachers to develop and implement culturally responsive special education services for students with disabilities. The program focuses on the unique needs of (a) children and youth with disabilities; (b) Alaska's diverse Native and non-Native communities; and (c) Alaska's remote and rural communities.

Bachelor of Arts: Special Education

Bachelor degree programs are designed to prepare students for employment, or graduate school, in their chosen field.

Typically a bachelor degree program is 120 credits (four years).

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS (2012-2013 CATALOG)

The M.A.T. in Special Education program prepares teacher candidates to develop and implement culturally responsive special education services for students with disabilities. The program focuses on the unique needs of: (a) children and youth with disabilities; (b) Alaska’s diverse Native and non-Native communities; and (c) Alaska’s remote, rural, and urban communities. Candidates who complete the M.A.T. in Special Education program can receive an Alaska Teaching Certificate with an Endorsement in Special Education (Grades K-12) from the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development.

The M.A.T. in Special Education program is designed to accommodate working professionals. Courses are offered in the evenings and in the summer, and all courses are offered online and/or via audioconference. This e-Learning format allows candidates who live and work in Alaska’s remote and rural communities to remain in their home communities while completing their graduate studies.
