The Shortscale Eualid (Eualus suckleyi)

Eualas suckleyi is a Caridean shrimp belonging to the Hippolytidae family. Shrimps of this family are often referred to as "broken back shrimps" because the tail and abdomen are frequently directed upwards. They are covered with distinct red bands and blotches. This color gets more dense over the appendages. There are also irregular whitish blotches on the carapace. They are present year round and are one of the most abundant shrimps in Southeast Alaska. They commonly congregate in well lit areas like docks and piers. Otherwise, they prefer a softer sand/mud substrate. Males are the smaller sex with a maximum length of 48mm. Females range out to 79mm total length.
