REU APPLICATION DIRECTIONS
The deadline for UAS's 2012 program has passed and we are no longer accepting materials. The National Science Foundation has many REU programs across the country. Visit their site and there may be other REU programs there that would be of interest.
1) Arrange for 2 professors, instructors, or employers (ieally a biology professor and 1 other professional) to send us letters of recommendation that include comments on your academic ability, motivation, work habits, and potential for success in the program. We need a signed copy on university or agency letterhead. Digital or scanned signatures are fine. Please have them send their letter as an attachment to reu@uas.alaska.edu. For filing purposes, this file name convention would be appreciated: student's last name, firstname and writer's initials. ( For example, Dr. James Peterson's letter for Ms. Susan Williams would be named WilliamsSusanJP.docx or pdf )
2) Email your current, college transcripts. If your college is a member of escrip safe service, this is an easy way to send official secure transcripts to us. A scan or an unofficial copy is fine as long as it is legible and complete.
3) Write a cover letter (1-2 pages) describing why you want to participate in the REU field program, your interests in biology, your academic or career goals, which projects interest you most, and reasons why you believe you will benefit from and contribute to the program. Please send this as a PDF attachment to the same e-mail address. This naming convention for the file would be appreciated: last name, first name + cover. ( for example Smith, Joe Cover.pdf ) Please do not send resumes.
4) Fill out our electronic application form.
5) Which items have come in for you can be checked here at our received materials page. Please check this page before the deadline. http://www.uas.alaska.edu/artssciences/naturalsciences/biology/undergraduate-research/REU/received_materials.html
When final decisions are made we will notify all applicants ( via email ) of their status. Still have questions? Check our FAQ page or contact program assistant Sara Caldwell at (907) 796-6316 or at the listed REU email address.
