Other News
Our new faculty members, Andrzej and Megan, have been busy getting accustomed to life in Juneau and at UAS. Both attended the 2010 Joint Meeting of the Mathematical Sciences in San Fransisco in January where Andrzej presented a talk in his research area. Jill, Brian, Megan and Chris attended the 2010 PNW MAA Section meeting in Seattle in April where Megan presented a talk, “An introduction and analysis of birth-death probability models,” her area of interest. Megan was also awarded a PNW MAA Section NExT Fellowship for 2010 - 2011. More recently, May 13 - 15, Megan went to "a pretty good" leadership conference in Sitka: "Emerging Leaders Dialogue", sponsored by The Institute of the North. The dialogue was directed toward young professionals in Alaska and included discussions of a variety of relevant topics in government, AK industry and sustainability, and education. She joined the group that discussed ways to improve the access to quality education, in particular for small remote villages, while maintaining the cultural ties and family responsibilities for the students and communities.
