Environmental Science

Students monitoring supra-glacial stream

UAS offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science as well as a minor in Environmental Science. The Environmental Science curriculum draws from a variety of disciplines including: the earth sciences, chemistry, physics, biology, math, and spatial analysis. Students learn biological principles and skills in lecture, laboratory, and field courses. A particular emphasis of the program is student involvement in research projects, and undergraduates in Environmental Science regularly present their research results at regional and national scientific meetings.

The program is composed of full time faculty with active research programs in a wide range of disciplines including: landscape ecology, hydrology, sensor development, geology, environmental chemistry, geochemistry, remote sensing, glaciology, and biogeochemistry.

The location of the university provides students with a natural laboratory that includes extensive ice fields, mountains, rainforest, wetlands, and marine habitat -- all within walking distance of the classrooms. A small student-to-professor ratio ensures a more personal approach to learning than is possible at larger universities.
