Optimal Storage Volumes for Rainwater Catchment Systems in Alaska

Rainwater Catchment

Rainwater collection is an alternative independent water supply practice that can not only benefit households with little or no available water, but can also reduce the demand on municipally-managed water resources. In order to aid in the design of rainwater catchment systems statewide, a study was conducted to estimate optimal rainwater storage requirements for a group of Alaskan communities experiencing a range of climate conditions.

A report is now available. The objective of the report is to present computer modeling results intended to estimate optimal rainwater catchment system storage requirements. The report describes the optimal storage capacity for systems designed to collect and store rainwater during the operational season only (i.e., during non-frozen conditions). (Back to Top)

ABPA Backflow Course

ATTAC and UAS Sitka have developed a Backflow Assembly Tester Course. This course will certify individuals for the four backflow devices that are common in our industry. The certification agency is the American Backflow Prevention Association using the USC Hydraulics Laboratory standards. We plan on offering this course annually. The next training is scheduled April 21-26 in Juneau. A renewal class is scheduled for April 25-26. (Back to Top)

Small Water System Reimbursement Program

The deadline for the Small Water System Operator Reimbursement program has been extended from May 15 to July 15. The Operator Certification Program, in cooperation with EPA, has funds available to reimburse water operators for costs associated with continuing education.

Who is eligible for reimbursement?
Certified and non-certified water operators of eligible water systems: Verification of employment as a water operator at an eligible water system is required. Reimbursement is only available for courses that make the operator eligible to take the certification exam. For more information on this program, eligibility, and how to apply, please visit the Operator Certification web site. (Back to Top)

Drinking Water Watch

ADEC Drinking Water Program staff have developed a program whereby owners, operators, and consumers can access specific information about a water system. The Drinking Water Watch program can be queried for water systems contact and general information, violation information, monitoring summaries, and sampling information. (Return to Top)
