The UAS Automotive Technology program submitted an application to the Automotive Industry Planning Council (AIPC) Awards of Excellence in June. The UAS program was judged to be the Alaska state winner and the national runner-up in our category (Post-Secondary, non-manufacturer affiliated). Applications for the award came from 17 states this year and the competition was intense. Tony Martin put together an excellent application for our winning package.  The awards were presented the week of November 27, 2006. Tony and the other national winners were recognized at the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) Convention in Atlanta.

The prizes for this prestigious award are significant; UAS has now received two new vehicles, a 2005 Dodge Magnum R/T and a 2006 Honda Accord. The value of these two vehicles is that they provide state of the art technology for our students to train with.

Tony Martin, head of the University of Alaska Southeast automotive technology department, speaks Monday with UAS Chancellor John Pugh about the program's new 2006 Honda Accord and 2005 Dodge Magnum R/T at the university's Technical Education Center. The UAS Automotive Technology program is the state winner and national runner-up of the Automotive Industry Planning Council Award of Excellence for post-secondary programs. Martin accepted the award Nov. 29 at the Association for Career and Technical Education Convention in Atlanta. The program was awarded the vehicles in recognition of its achievement. The new cars will serve as state-of-the-art teaching aides.
