Life History

Nucella lima is dioecious and after copulation the females lay yellowish egg capsules, called “sea oats” that are somewhat rigid.   Each egg capsule contains 500-900 eggs that are about 240 µm in diameter.   Ninety-five percent of these eggs are consumed by those developing into embryos.   Egg capsules usually are found between December 21 and April 21.
