Wildlife Refuge Internship
Summer 2008
Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge Green River, Wyoming

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is seeking college level students to conduct wildlife related surveys at Seedskadee NWR and Cokeville Meadows NWR.  These Refuges are located in beautiful (and windy) southwestern Wyoming.  Seedskadee NWR is located along a 37 mile stretch of the Green River, encompassing 26,000 acres of riverine, riparian, wetland and high desert habitat types.  Cokeville Meadows NWR is located along the upper reach of the Bear River and contains riparian and wetland habitat.

The intern will assist refuge managers and biologists with daily refuge operations and programs to gain a wide range of skills and experience in wildlife habitat management and public service.  Duties will include: conducting surveys for shorebirds, swans, cranes, sage grouse, waterfowl and raptors; collecting vegetation data on terrestrial and aquatic species; controlling invasive weeds through mechanical or chemical means; installing or repairing various structures, signs and fences; cleaning up debris and organizing materials; and assisting with environmental education programs and public use activities and events.   Interns will be trained to use Trimble GPS units, ArcGIS software, ATVs, and will gain vegetation and wildlife identification skills.

Accommodations & Community

Housing is available onsite at Seedskadee NWR.  The three bedroom bunkhouse has one private and one shared bathroom.  All other living quarters (kitchen and living room) are shared.  The nearby towns of Rock Springs and Green River are located approximately 40 miles south of the Refuge and host an array of shopping and entertainment opportunities.  Due to the remote setting of the Refuge, personal vehicles are highly recommended.  For the outdoor enthusiast the area offers many opportunities, a few hours drive in any direction will find you at Yellowstone and Teton National Parks, the Wind River Range, or Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area.

Duration & Application Process

The position(s) will begin in early May and conclude mid September.  Longer commitments are preferred, but duration of internship is flexible.  The position involves long hours Monday through Friday with occasional weekend and holiday work.  Interns will receive $125 per week, and housing will be provided onsite at Seedskadee NWR.  Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, and possess or be earning a degree in wildlife biology or natural resource sciences.  Submit a cover letter and resumes to:
