Southeast Alaska Field Notes

Nephtys caeca

· The animal photographed was found in relatively large grained sand at Eagle Beach in Juneau, Alaska. I have also    located the worm borrowed in anoxic (black) mud.
· The worm was found about three inches down in the sand and was living among other Annelids and bivalve   mollusks.
· The animal continuously everted and retracted its proboscis and moved in its characteristic undulating fashion.
· After being exposed on the surface the animal attempted to burrow back in the sand. When I tried to pull the animal   from the sand a large posterior section of the worm broke away. This portion still undulated, but much faster than it   had before. The anterior section of the worm burrowed down into the sand.
