Pycnopodia helianthoides
Sunflower Star

purple pycnopodia

The fastest, largest, and coolest asteroid out there. Moving at rates of over 1.6 meters per minute and consuming purple sea urchins whole, this slightly squishy, flabby sea star can weigh up to 5 kilos and fill the bottom of a wash tub  with its large aboral disc and as many as 24 rays. Compared to the rigid skeleton of other sea stars, the Sunflower Star has a velvety flexible disk because the calcareous disks are not connected to one another. The fragile body requires the support of the water to survive and will autotomize rays when stressed. The aboral surface can be purplelish-grey, yellow, orange, brown, pink or red and is covered with tufts of up to 75 papulae.
