Associate of Applied Science Degrees

Power Technology

The UAS School of Career Education offers two Diesel based AAS in Power Technology Degrees:

Diesel Emphasis

or

USCG Documented Marine Oiler

The Associate of Applied Science degree programs offer students the opportunity to take hands on technical courses, add the general education requirements and get a degree from UAS.  Most of the courses taken in a diesel Occupational Endorsement (OE) can be applied to the AAS Degree.

AAS with a Diesel Emphasis

Degree completers could find employment working with various diesel engine applications such as (but not limited to):

  • Earthmoving companies
  • Power generation plants
  • Trucking fleets
  • Freight handlers
  • State or city maintenance shops
  • Airport maintenance
  • Machinery dealers
  • Mining companies
  • Logging companies
  • Tour bus operations
  • Sand and gravel operations

AAS with a USCG Documented Marine Oiler Emphasis

This AAS degree is for students wanting to begin a career in marine transportation working in the engine room as an OILER.

With successful completion of this degree, completion of a 6 month sea time internship, and a written USCG examination, students receive an endorsement.  This qualifies them for employment in the engine rooms of large U.S. vessels.

OILER is the "qualified" entry level position in the engine room.  OE completers can expect to find employment with the state ferry system, private ferries, cruise ships, seafood processors, tug boats, or any other large sea going vessels.  This degree incorporates a six month un-paid internship at sea as part of the requirements.

Incoming students will have to pass a USCG background check, drug screen, and physical agility exam during the first semester.  They will also have to pass a complete physical exam.

NOTE:  There is also an Occupational Endorsement program for OILERS if you are interested in a shorter educational experience from UAS and still get the OILER document.

Program Information

  • Must be at least 18 years old by the time you do the internship on board the AMHS ferry.
  • Must pass a physically fit for sea duty test
  • Must pass a federal background security screening
  • Must get at least a C+ in all the required courses
  • There is a required 6 month internship on a state ferry (non-paid)
  • The USCG written Oiler exam has to be passed after the internship
  • This program does NOT award sea time for completing the courses and is not USCG approved.

A.A.S. Power Technology
