Basic Safety Training

Prerequisites

Must obtain a doctor's statement of health.

Must be able to demonstrate physical competencies.  Students who cannot demonstrate physical competencies will be unable to pass the class.

Must be able to read and write fluently in the English Language at or above the 8th grade level.  Students are required to take and pass an English competency test at the UAS Learning Center in Ketchikan, Juneau or Sitka prior to the first day of class. Cost of the test is $5.

Description

The 40-hour Basic Safety Training class is required for mariners on commercial vessels over 200 Tons sailing outside the boundary line. The course is USCG approved and meets requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) 95. The four modules of the course are Personal Survival, Fire Fighting, First Aid and Personal Safety and Social Responsibility.

The 24-hour Basic Safety Training Refresher is intended for Mariners who are renewing their credentials and lack 1 year of seatime in the past 5 years required to maintain recency of BST.

Notes

Students will have one 2-hr session at the pool and will need an extra set of clothing for this portion of the class - swimsuits will not be allowed.  Students will be required to don immersion suits and swim in an immersion suit.  They will also right a liferaft. 

During the firefighting session, students will don fire turnout gear, including a self-contained breathing apparatus and will be required to fight live fires using appropriate equipment.  Students may not have any facial hair that will interfere with the seal of the SCBA.
