The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Commercial Fisheries Division, is seeking a highly motivated student who is currently enrolled in or considering a degree in Fisheries or a related field to work as a College Intern II located in Kodiak.

Under general supervision, the successful candidate will work within the Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands Crab Research Program with the primary duties including:

  • Performing crab husbandry tasks as assigned, including feeding, cleaning, measuring water quality parameters, and monitoring and adjusting water flow
  • Accurately obtaining and recording data following established protocols for processing crabs or tissue samples in the laboratory
  • Performing data management procedures, including data review, entry, organization, and quality assurance
  • Learning project management procedures, including prioritizing tasks, reporting progress, and managing time effectively

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently accepted, enrolled, and attending an accredited college in an undergraduate degree program while maintaining an academic load of at least six credit hours per semester (eight credit hours per quarter);
  • AND: In good standing with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher;
  • AND: Have successfully completed training as a College Intern I or 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of coursework in the degree program.

The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following desired strengths:

  • Enthusiasm for conducting biological research and interest in developing professionally in the fisheries field;
  • Positive attitude, including under adverse conditions;
  • Strong communication skills (both oral and written);
  • Self-starter with ability to work well independently without direct supervision;
  • Ability to work well as a member of a team;
  • Ability to work safely in the lab and field environments

Housing: may include housing at a bunkhouse.
