Summary:

The Juneau Economic Development Council fosters a healthy and sustainable economic climate in
Juneau and throughout Southeast Alaska. In collaboration with other organizations, JEDC implements
initiatives to maintain, expand, and create jobs and economic opportunities. Our primary focus: help make
Juneau a great capital city; strengthen key regional industry; promote entrepreneurship and small
business; develop talent; and deliver core economic development services.

The Program Officer/Researcher position key responsibilities are as follows:

  • Stay current with published economic data and continuously analyze economic trends. Keep current economic data points updated on the JEDC website, provide monthly economic insights and keep presentations on the economy current.
  • Convey results that summarize findings; present findings to internal clients (Staff and Board) and external civic, business and government representatives.
  • Produce JEDC’s Annual Indicator Report, including presentations.
  • Organize meetings and other events that include internal and external project members, including coordinating meeting times, places, agendas, publishing meeting notes and tracking follow-up and action items.
  • Support economic cluster working groups.
  • Represent JEDC at community or regional meetings, conferences and other events.
  • Develop program proposals, write grants, and pursue partnerships that advance the mission of JEDC.
  • Assist in the organization and execution of events of all sizes, from focus group meetings, networking socials as well as events such as Startup Weekend, Innovation Summit and Alaska Angel Conference.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements:

  • Undergraduate Bachelor’s degree is required in a relevant field such as economics, business administration, resource development, and community development. Graduate degree, or course work and/or professional experience comparable to a graduate degree, is preferred.
  • Work experience should demonstrate excellent leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues and with diverse participants within inter-agency and community groups.
  • Experience with both the non-profit and business sectors desired. Entrepreneurial experience or experience assisting small business development and working with entrepreneurs is a plus.
  • Experience as a consultant is preferred.
  • Able to work at a detailed level, plan, organize and follow through on multiple priorities.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of one or more the following sectors within Southeast Alaska: Mining, Tourism, Arts & Culture, Wood Products, Ocean Products, Alaska State Government, and Research.
  • Able to conduct research and analyze economic and businesses information (financial information, statistical reports, industry publications, and business plans).
  • Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills are a necessity.
  • Job demands strong time management and organizational skills, ability to multitask and change gears in response to deadlines and priorities.
  • Excellent computer skills including familiarity with Windows environment: MS applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, web browsers, Internet data mining, and database applications.

Normal Salary Range: Depends on Experience

Delegated Authority: May supervise Program Assistant, temporary staff engaged for a specific project, one or more student interns, and/or act as a team leader for specific projects.

Work Location & Schedule: This is a permanent, full time, exempt position, located at JEDC’s offices at 612 West Willoughby, Ave., in Juneau, Alaska. The work schedule is M-F, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with frequent after-hours meetings and occasional weekends required as well as infrequent travel.
