The Department of Administration, Division of Administrative Services is now hiring for a Budget Analyst I/II in Juneau. This position may be filled at the I or II level depending on qualifications. A candidate hired at a lower level may be promoted upon completion of a training plan and required service time. Applicants at all skill levels are encouraged to apply! Direct experience in Alaska state government is not required for consideration. Outside-the-box applicants with atypical experience could make a great addition to our budget team. Duties of this position include but are not limited to:

Do you want to:

  • Coordinate, verify, and analyze operating and capital budget requests and submissions?

  • Conduct research and analyses of budget issues and historical expenditures?

  • Prepare budget reports and presentations?

  • Manage reporting of performance measure targets and data?

  • Assure adherence to OMB budget instructions and guidance?

  • Review and process position changes, revised programs, and budget amendments?

Do you have knowledge of:

  • Operating and capital budgeting principles?

  • Organizational/agency operation?

  • Legislative process?

Do you have the skills & abilities to:

  • Communicate and collaborate with many stakeholders?

  • Solve complex problems creatively using sound reasoning?

  • Use spreadsheets and databases to collect and analyze financial and program data?

  • Compose and edit letters and memos that are convincing and compelling?

  • Analyze and implement state statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures?

  • Meet challenging deadlines while juggling changing priorities?

  • Efficiently manage your workload and that of others?

Desired Strengths:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical staff, including the ability to teach and mentor those who do not have extensive knowledge and experience in budget, accounting and finance;

  • Experience preparing reports for senior management that are intuitive, concise, and well formatted, using Excel, Word, or comparable software;

  • Experience with an automated governmental budgeting system, finance systems, or other automated finance and accounting systems;

  • Knowledge of and experience with the budget and legislative process;

  • Experience with and knowledge of accounting principles;

  • Demonstrated analytical ability with the experience and knowledge to construct a detailed analysis;

  • Demonstrated proofreading and editing skills for both written narratives and detailed analytical spreadsheets;

  • A “self-starter” who takes initiative to independently identify and prioritize work products, seek out resources needed to complete the work, and complete the project on-time;

  • History of successful collaboration with others to produce quality work under tight deadlines; and,

  • Willingness to take on other duties as assigned.
