This position is located on the Tongass National Forest, Petersburg Ranger District in Petersburg, Alaska.  


This position is located within the District’s Implementation and Operations staff group at the Petersburg Ranger District. Duties for this position include field and office work associated with the timber sale preparation program with occasional assignments to the timber sale administration program as needed. Applicants will interpret environmental documents, Forest Service handbook and manuals, the Tongass Forest Plan, and all applicable state and federal laws governing timber management. 

Applicants shall have a strong working knowledge in field navigation and reconnaissance, unit boundary designation with consideration for access and resource concerns, area determination, timber cruising, and logging system capabilities and constraints. Incumbent is expected to become a certified timber cruiser upon employment. Incumbent will use computer programs for spreadsheet analysis, cruise data processing, map making, and geospatial analysis using ArcGIS to perform day to day assignments. Applicants should have knowledge of current and industry standard GPS technology for unit boundary traversing and field data collection. Incumbent will perform and assemble timber sale appraisals, timber Sale Area maps, logging plans, timber sale contract packages, and timber sale reports.

Applicants should have good communications skills both verbally and written. Interaction with the public in management and distribution of permits for Forest Products will occur. The candidate will work independently and in a team environment. Field work associated with the position is performed in the office and on steep slopes in remote settings, during inclement weather.

Travel Required

75% or less - This position is expected to travel to the field 75% of the time.


$37,055 to $41,304 per year
