Elizabeth Sica: 2012 Outstanding Graduate in Social Sciences
“I didn’t ever expect to enjoy being at UAS as much as I did, coming from JDHS and living in Juneau pretty much my entire life, but I’ve done so many cool things here within just a couple of years.”
Elizabeth Sica is receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Sciences, with emphases in government and political science, and secondary emphases in history and sociology. Attending UAS has given her the chance to travel to different countries and see new places while getting her degree.
“[Coming to UAS has] been one of the best decisions of my life,” said the lifelong Juneau resident. “[Tuition] is cheap here, I don’t have any student loans, and I’ve been able to do a lot of different programs with UAS like Study Abroad and internships.”
Sica is part of a class of UAS students who recently returned after two months in Cuba, studying the language, learning about the effects of tourism, and being immersed in the world of author Ernest Hemingway.
“It was really cool to share this experience in Cuba, a totally off limits country. Going to Cuba was a great way to end my school career, especially having UAS professors go with us. It was great to [go with] this group of students that I’ve already known, some since elementary school, some I’ve just met.”
Sica doesn’t think she has missed out on anything by going to UAS. In fact the opposite is the case.
“I didn’t ever expect to enjoy being at UAS as much as I did, coming from JDHS and living in Juneau pretty much my entire life, but I’ve done so many cool things here within just a couple of years,” she said. Sica also went on academic exchange to Italy.
After graduation, Sica plans to save money, but is considering enrolling in a Master’s program at UAA.
“Right now I’m just working and saving money,” she said. “Eventually I really want to go to graduate school and get a Master’s in Public Health since it’s really in high demand.”
UAS' 2012 Juneau Commencement will be held May 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the UAS Recreation Center.
