My UAS Experience

Every semester I’ve been exposed to a new concept or idea that has fundamentally changed the way I see and interact with the places around me. Inspired by the professors and the atmosphere of UAS, I’ve experienced some amazing things. I gained an appreciation for my interaction with the physical world from flying up to the Juneau Icefield and climbing mountains and studying how the geomorphic forces that have shaped the landscape and created the features that are so awe inspiring to the mountaineer and snowboarder in me. I gained an awareness of how culture shapes the way we see the world after spending a semester in Cuba examining their culture and drawing parallels with their identity of place with my own. These experiences have given me a stronger appreciation for the place that I’m from. It is because of the positive encouragement of the people at UAS and the genuine passion for knowledge that my time here has been so empowering. My experience at UAS has been life altering, I will never again look at a rock, a glacier, a roof, a handle on a cup, or my home in the same way.

About Alex Botelho

Alex's exploratory and place-based approaches to learning exemplified the spatial perspective at the core of the UAS Geography Program. From the streets of Cuba to the streams and mountains near Juneau, Alex has brought an intense curiosity to each of his classes. He’s not afraid to ask difficult questions and then to seek out answers, and his enthusiasm is infectious. Alex's appreciation for the natural world also led him to become heavily involved in the Outdoor Studies Program during his time at UAS.
