Celebrating Graduates 2014

Mackenzie Grace Merrill: 2014 Outstanding Graduate — Business Administration

Mackenzie Grace Merrill, Outstanding Graduate — Business Admin.

I chose UAS because I wanted a small university experience without missing out on big university opportunities. I wanted to stay in-state for school, but the thought of a 300 person lecture hall where my professors only knew me as a homework grade did not appeal to me. I have really enjoyed the small class sizes of my on-campus classes and getting to know my professors. The School of Management distance program was also a huge draw for me. As someone who has put myself through college, I needed the flexibility of taking online courses to accommodate working and graduating on time.

I appreciate that my professors have experience in industry, and not strictly in academia. Being taught by professors who have actually worked professionally in the subject areas they are teaching is very enriching.

While applying for jobs after graduation, I already see how many of the projects and activities I did in my classes have helped me develop the kinds of skills that employers are looking for, while preparing me for work in the “real world.”

I initially pursued a management degree with intentions of pursuing a career in tourism. However, my economics, statistics, and research experience that I gained during my education lead me to an internship with the Economic Research Group in the Alaska Department of Revenue. My time as an intern has cultivated an interest in economics and government. I may pursue a position within the State of Alaska, the Alaska Legislature, or still possibly tourism. My degree has prepared me for any of these career paths! ~Mackenzie Merrill
