SITE NAVIGATION - File Structure is everything

Folders and subfolders with content pages (html pages) marked as "Include in Navigation" and to be "indexed" by Cascade Server will reflect the structure of your site with our automatic contextual navigation feature. This enables Cascade Server to 'read' the files and pages and generate navigation that automatically appear in the left-side navigation (#3 below). This feature will allow you to create pages and reorganize navigation and those changes will be reflected in your sites' navigation links, 'bread crumbs' bar and site map.

Shortly following your 1-on-1 meeting you should take another look at your existing site (if you have one) with a better understanding of how to organize your sites' files so viewers of your site can easily find what it is that they're looking for. For a quick introduction to file structure please view the graphic below followed by the explanation of each step.

Navigation Sample

  1. CMS File View: This view shows the Financial Aid site with its current four folders along with images folder. The view is sorted by alpha and does not determine the order that files appear in the actual navigation, as shown in view #3.
  2. CMS Order View: This dialog allows one to access the files but to also determine the order that they appear in the navigation. View #2 is the view if the Financial_Aid folder is selected in #1. As you can see, the order shows the index page (homepage) as number one in the order with Financial Aid Home at the top of the actual navigation as your viewers would see it in view #3. The images folder, although appearing as 6 in the order does not show in the navigation due to "include in navigation" being deselected (see Content Tab below).
  3. Left-side Navigation: This is the resulting navigation as it would appear in your published site in both the sandbox and live server. Any changes that are made in the CMS to folder names, new pages added/removed or ordering will appear in the left-side navigation following publishing.
