  • Mike Bell has worked in the diesel engine, heavy duty equipment, welding, mining, and marine repair fields for over 40 years. He was raised on the coast of Oregon and moved to Southeast Alaska in 1967 to work as a mechanic in the logging industry. Over the past

    41 years he has worked as a master mechanic for logging camps, a diesel technician for the Cummins Engine Dealership in Fairbanks, as a lead millwright for Alaska Pulp Corp.,

    as the machinist for the Greens Creek Mine, and created, owned and operated Freeman – Bell, a machine shop and equipment repair company that had shops in Wrangell, Ketchikan and Juneau, Alaska and served the logging, mining, construction, and fishing industries of Alaska and Western Canada.

    In 1984 Mike completed a 2 year course of study on diesel engines, power trains, cat hydraulic systems, gas engines, brakes & suspension and steering at American Diesel College in Denver, Co. He then certified as an ASE Master Heavy Duty Truck Technician. He has EPA 608 & 609 Certifications in Air Conditioning and is a Proctor for EPA 608-609 testing in this area.

    He is an Assistant Professor of Diesel Technology and currently teaches courses in Diesel Engine repair, Hydraulics, Welding, Air Conditioning, Heavy Duty Brakes, Steering and Suspension.

  • Chuck Craig has been in the diesel engine field for about 35 years. He grew up here in Juneau living on a vessel that had twin Detroit Diesel engines. He has spent the majority of his working life in the diesel & marine field. Chuck worked for 15 years at N C Machinery Co. (the Southeast Alaska Caterpillar dealership) before he joined UAS in the diesel program in 1995.

    In 2000 Chuck was selected as the Professor of the Year for Alaska by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

    He is a tenured associate professor and teaches most of the DIESEL course offerings. He is also an International Fluid Power Society certified Hydraulic Specialist and an American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) Marine Electrical Technician.
