UAS MARINE ENGINE ROOM (OILER) OCCUPATIONAL ENDORSEMENT

This training is for the student that wants to work as an Oiler, the entry level position for a rewarding career working in large vessel engine rooms.

The course content covers the different support systems as well as the diesel engine. All of the classes are at least 50% hands on to let the student practice their new skills. UAS has a wide selection of excellent training aids such as engines, marine transmissions, hydraulic components, generator sets,and many other items.

NOTE: There is also an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree program for OILERS if you are interested. See the information listed under program offerings for more information.

The University has partnered with the Alaska Marine Highway System, Inland Boatman's Union to create an opportunity for apprenticeship in the 302 after completion of the 3 steps listed below. 

REQUIRED COURSES (STEP 1)
FALL SEMESTER:

 
SPRING SEMESTER:
DESL 261 Marine Auxiliary Systems 3 cr
WELD 120 Basic Welding 3 cr
MT 129 Basic Safety Training 2 cr

28 CREDITS are required to get this OCCUPATIONAL ENDORSEMENT.

CRITERIA (STEP 2):

~ Must be at least 18 years old by the time you do the internship on board the AMHS ferry.

~ Open to both men and women.

~Must pass a physical exam.

~Must pass a federal background security screening and be finger printed.

~Must get a least a C+ in all the required courses.

EXAM (STEP 3):

Take and pass the U.S. Coast Guard written OILER exam.

Interesting Fact: As of May 2007, AMHS Oiler pay was $22.69 per hour plus benefits.
