Interesting Fact: Starting AMHS Oiler pay is $23.82 per hour in Southeast Alaska and $21.66 per hour in Southwest Alaska.
This training is for the student that wants to work as an Oiler, the entry level position for a rewarding career working in large vessel engine rooms.
The course content covers the different support systems as well as the diesel engine. All of the classes are at least 50% hands on to let the student practice their new skills. UAS has a wide selection of excellent training aids such as engines, marine transmissions, hydraulic components, generator sets,and many other items.

The University has partnered with the Alaska Marine Highway System, Inland Boatman's Union to create an opportunity for apprenticeship in the 302 after completion of the 3 steps listed below.
CRITERIA
- Must be at least 18 years old by the time you do the internship on board the AMHS ferry.
- Women and minorities encouraged.
- Must pass a physical exam.
- Must pass a federal background security screening and be finger printed.
- Must get a least a C+ in all the required courses.
