We are here to help provide equal opportunities for students who experience disabilities. This is a university-wide commitment. DS is here to help you by using a "best practices" and person first approach. Academic accommodations and reasonable accommodations are part of equalizing the playing field. DS is responsible for the coordination of accommodations, and you, the student are responsible for initiating those services by contacting the DS office.

General Services Available to all Students who Experience Disabilities:

  • Registration assistance
  • Faculty notification (only with student’s permission)
  • Liaison with other agencies such as the Alaska Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and Veteran’s Affairs
  • Use of Adaptive Computing Lab for training and study
  • References to reading materials on disabilities
  • Academic adjustments

Academic Adjustments Available with Supporting Documentation:

  • Testing adjustments (e.g., Extended time, reduced distraction environment, and/or access to adaptive software as needed)
  • Note-taking assistance
  • Scribe and Reader services
  • Alternate Format Materials (e.g., book and other course materials in large print, Braille, audio tape, digital audio, electronic text, etc.)
  • Assistive technology (e.g., computer equipment, tape recorders, assistive listening devices, etc.)
  • American Sign Language interpreters when available
