Post Baccalaureate ECE
Admission Requirements
1. Contact Susan Andrews to set up an advising session.
2. Complete graduate application on-Line and $60 processing fee.
3. An official transcript indicating baccalaureate degree and a GPA of 3.0.
4. Two letters of recommendation on SOE form.
5. Two writing assessments:
a. Statement of professional goals. This is a 2 to 3 page typewritten and double spaced, formal paper containing a summary of education experiences. Statement will include:
- A description of professional goals related to what is needed to teach early childhood students; and
- A statement of how the program might help in attaining those goals.
6. Memorandum of Support from Local School District.
7. Documentation of Successful Work with Children. (Evidence of successful experience with children in an elementary setting.) ***
8. Experienced applicants should submit a letter from a supervisor. Applicants new to education may complete a one week, SOE-approved classroom experience as a volunteer teacher's aide in a public or private school setting, resulting in an evaluation by the host teacher or principal.
9. Qualifying scores on the Praxis I test which is a requirement from the State of Alaska for the Initial Teaching Certificate. Visit the Praxis website for more information on registering and taking the Praxis I test.
Minimum credit hours required for the program are 46 (including 15 prerequisite hours). The total credit hours must include 9 approved education credits earned at UAS. Student teaching must be completed while enrolled at UAS. To successfully complete the program, students must pass all three sections of the Praxis I at state approved levels.
*Conditional admission may be considered for slightly lower GPAs or
mitigating conditions.
** These samples will be judged in terms of readability, style and
proficiency in writing as well as alignment and compatibility of the
student's objectives and expectations with the School of Education's
Goals.
***Arrangements must be made for a 1-week practicum experience if no
prior work with children can be documented.
Students may start taking the prerequisite courses at any time. UAS is an open enrollment university, so all of the credential application forms do not have to be completed before beginning the prerequisite courses.
