Students gain basic and intermediate programming skills for the purpose of manipulating robotics, drones, and wearable technology.

Core emphasis is the research on sociolinguistics as it relates to reading. Focus is on language acquisition, dialect, and home and community influences. The history and philosophy of reading are also course components.

Focuses on teaching reading and writing using a variety of reading, writing and study strategies and proven, effective practices for a broad range of students, including those with special needs. Topics include reading comprehension, word identification, vocabulary, spelling, study skills, and the writing process, including planning and mechanics. The Alaska Standards for English/Language Arts and the assessment of reading and writing skills and proficiencies are emphasized. Students will teach their own students how to improve their reading and writing, and will develop and implement a classroom-based comprehensive reading program they will share as a model for a school program.

Tlingit science is a way of life, deeply rooted in observation, relationship, needs, and ingenious ways of knowing developed locally over thousands of years. Language speaks to the relationship between man, plant, and animal and explains how humans are woven into nature. Participants will dive into enthnobiology through an integrative, multi-disciplinary approach utilizing songs, dancing, art forms, harvests, food preparation, comparative experience, ancient and modern pedagogy and methodologies, and field experiences. Ethnobiology is the study of how people perceive and interact with the ecosystems they inhabit, both in the past and the immediate present. Participants will express their understanding of ethnobiology by their participation in this pilot unit as well as contributing to the development of resources for school district and community use.

The Alaska Arts Education Consortium and the North Slope Borough School District are sponsoring the fifth in a 5-year cycle of one week institutes featuring major Alaska Native cultures and traditional arts. Focus is on Inupiat arts, language, and culture. It includes visual and performing arts, carving, dancing, sewing, storytelling and singing, and interactive experiences with Inupiat elders and Artists. Leaders will present and model traditional ways of knowing traditional art processes and forms. Participants will discuss how to adapt what is learned to instruction in k-12 classrooms across the North Slope and Alaska, and design a lesson plan to use in the following year. A research paper, project, or a professional portfolio, jointly approved by the student's graduate committee and the student; to coincide with the student's professional objectives. The portfolio should document the required knowledge and ability to apply the standards set by the UAS School of Education. Portfolio criteria should be obtained from the School of Education or the graduate advisor. The student's graduate committee may require an oral defense of either option.
