Spring and Summer 09 « Back to Topics

I can't believe I just entered Summer 09 in that heading! Wow! This year has gone so quickly!  First, if you plan to attend ED 634 Classroom Integration of Audio-Video Technology in Juneau the last two weeks in June, please let me know. Housing is available on campus if you act early. I can send you more information if you are interested.

ED 628 Technology in Instructional Design, taught by Cheryl Johnson, will also be offered. The Mathematics Program will also be offering a technology in mathematics course this coming summer which would serve as an elective for ED Technology candidates.

Spring 2009 courses will be:

ED 688 Leadership in Technology, taught by Marsha Gladhart

ED 628 Technology in Instructional Design, taught by Cheryl Johnson

Goodbye and Hello! « Back to Topics

Naomi Piehl, our administrative assistant, is leaving us to move to the lower 48 so her husband can accept an exciting new position.  Naomi has helped many of you through your admission application and registration. She will be greatly missed!  Naomi is also expecting a baby next spring. She will continue as a candidate in our program so you will still "see" her in classes.

The good news is that we have a wonderful new assistant, Rebecca Mathews. Rebecca is new to UAS and will be working as Administrative Assistant for the ED Tech and Reading Specialist programs and for Dean Harris. Rebecca moved to Alaska from Arizona last summer. She previously worked as Administrative Assistant to the Senior Dean of the college in the town where she lived.  She is enjoying the amazing sights Alaska has to offer and looks forward to a great future with UAS. We are fortunate to have her join us!

Congratulations to Robin Johnson (2001) and Tony Baylinson (2006) who are now Apple Professional Development consultants. They work mainly with Alaska educators and students involved in the Consortium for Digital Learning program sponsored by the AASB. More information about the CDL project can be found on the AASB website.

In two short months, Tony reports he has worked in Chevak, Barrow, Wrangell, Haines, Anchorage. Topics  included using Web 2.0 for communication and collaboration in education, teaching apps like iMovie 08, Garageband, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, etc., and focusing generally on how to seamlessly fuse technology with the amazing things that classroom teachers have been doing around the state since long before the advent of computer technology.

Robin has visited LKSD (Kipnuk) where she worked with teachers and students helping them infuse technology into the classroom.  On a recent trip to Juneau she trained JSD teachers on podcasting, iChat, iCal and iWeb.

Frankie Clark (2004) reports from Nevada that he just " went to NACOL's Virtual Schools Symposium conference for online learning in Phoenix, AZ. Next year's symposium will be held in Austin, TX. Some interesting persectives ... http://www.nacol.org/events/vss_2008/.

We are considering a move off Blackboard ($50,000/year) to Agilix which provides a Microsoft stack-based offline/online syn'c ability similar in functionality to Outlook. This way all end users can access their courses and complete assignments whether or not they are online. Very cool. I am also spearheading a move toward Maestro for our new registration/SIS: http://www.bocavox.com/edu/. The system is customized to K-12 online learning from the start ... very busy right now preparing for our merger with KLVX (school district owns public television station in Vegas) and move to the flagship new CCSD building in March. All systems must be online by then."

Maryjane Hadaway (2007) has a new position with the 354th Force Support Squadron/FSOT at Eielson AFB coordinating training at the squadron level, including formal and ancillary training for all employees, both military and civilian; providing newcomer orientation, including food handler's training, customer service training, suicide prevention, force protection, information protection, and others; and track annual training requirements.

Sam McPhetres (2006) was awarded 2nd place in the  ASTE 2008 iDidaPhoto contest for his photo of two brown bears titled Play Time
