May , 2010 --- Marsha Gladhart
Rebecca Mathews, administrative assistant for the Educational Technology Program, has left us to return to her home in Arizona. Our temporary assistant will be Kent Kay. You can reach him at kent.kay@uas.alaska.edu or (907) 796-6525. We will be conducting a search for a permanent replacement soon. Rebecca will certainly be missed! After starting with Apple in 2008 as a Professional Development
consultant for school districts and higher education institutions in
both Alaska and throughout the Lower 48, Tony Baylinson has recently
accepted a position as a Curriculum Manger for AppleCare. He has since
relocated with his wife Leslie to Austin, Texas where Apple Inc. has
it's second largest campus and an operations center for the AppleCare
division of the company. Tony will serve as the lead instructional
designer and curriculum manager for all of Apple Developer Support
training. ADS comprises the advisor teams who provide support for
developers of Mac Applications, iPhone Apps, and most recently, iPad
Apps. We're sorry to lose Tony as an adjunct instructor but excited that he has been "beamed up to the mother ship" as he says. The School of Education will have a new dean starting this fall. Dr. Deb Lo has accepted the position and will join us some time this summer. Larry Harris, current dean, is retiring in June. As you know, I'm retiring but have delayed my departure from Juneau until the end of July in order to work on our upcoming NCATE accreditation report and to teach the ED 698 Master's Portfolio course this summer. After that, I will be relocating to Winslow on Bainbridge Island-just a short ferry ride from Seattle.
Congratulations to all the 2009 and 2010 graduates! Robin Gilcrist and Jon Kludt-Painter (pictured below) walked in the Juneau Commencement Ceremony on May 9th and were shown in a photo in the Juneau Empire article on the ceremonies. Dallas Price (current candidate) reports that her sixth graders created documentaries for the National History Day
competition. "As it turns out, creating documentaries asks students to
demonstrate most, and sometimes all, of the writing and technology
standards for our grade level. The kids were highly motivated by this
project and the outcome was positive for all students. As a bonus, one
team won their state category and will compete in Maryland in June. I
plan to keep National History Day documentary production in my lesson
plans each year. Whether teachers decide to compete or not, the
elements of a documentary are the perfect vehicle for technology
infused learning. In October 2010, I will be presenting this project at
the National Association of Gifted Children conference." Jason Daniels (2009 graduate) was surprised last year with the BP Teacher of the Year award for the Kenai District. Congratulations, Jason! From Marilyn Burgess (2007 graduate and UAS adjunct): "I have been accepted to participate in a summer program for teachers of oceanography at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. It's called the Maury Project and is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society. I'll be looking for in service opportunities in the fall so that I can share what I learn with other teachers; and I'm scheduled to teach oceanography online next year. I'm also looking forward to attending the ISTE annual convention in Denver in June." Jon Kludt-Painter (2010 graduate) has a new position offering teacher technology integration support with the Petersburg School District. "I will be offering teacher technology integration support. Time has
been built into my day to work directly with teachers to provide
technology application/integration support. I will continue to support
the elementary school's fifth grade technology exploratory as well as
teach an eighth grade and high school technology applications course."
