Alaska Arts Ed Summit, “Taking Charge” hosted by ASCA, Anchorage
April 27 - 28
Purpose: To deepen the presence and impact of arts education and the arts in education in Alaskan Schools by engaging leaders in action planning.
Participants: 19 representatives of arts ed organizations, school districts, U.A. State School Board and Commissioner of Education.
Outcome: Drafted outline of a 3-5 year Action Plan with five priorities: (1) Actively promote a high school graduation requirement in the Arts/Cultural Arts, (2) Produce performance standards (and GLEs) in the Arts, (3) Initiate a Principals’ Initiative, (4) Create a Curriculum Clearinghouse and a Talent Bank of Teaching Artists, Mentors, Curriculum/Arts Specialists, Coaches, and (5) Advocate for an Arts Ed Specialist in the Department of Education and Early Development, in partnership with ASCA. Other goals were also drafted.

Purpose: To introduce teachers to the AK Art online curriculum and related resources.
Participants: 17 teachers. Each received a CD of web-based lessons, posters of art images, and a series of publications produced by the Anchorage Museum.
3rd Basic Institute: hosted by AAEC, Juneau

Purpose: To introduce teachers to the AK Art online curriculum and related resources.
Participants: 39 teachers (30 rural, 9 urban).
First Visual Arts Institute: hosted by Fairbanks North Star School District and AAEC, Fairbanks

Purpose: Teachers will understand how the visual arts are part of a balanced school program that contributes to overall student achievement, including strategies for teaching the visual arts with Fairbanks North Star Borough School District ARTiculate Art Kits.

Purpose: To train 15 Alaskan artists who are involved with residencies to develop a workshop for classroom teachers.
Participants: Alaskan artists selected by AIS Director and others.
Outcome: Increased knowledge by artists about responsibilities of teachers in relation to academic standards and testing. Workshops developed, to be delivered in home communities.

Purpose: To bring together Alaskan artists to discuss what artists can do to make a positive difference in the lives of youth and encourage community engagement, using the Developmental Assets Framework.

June 8 – 9, 2001
Purpose: “to develop a statewide strategy to promote the arts as an essential part of
basic education in Alaska and to determine the role ASCA should play in
this overall strategy.”
Participants: 25
Outcomes: ASCA should: (1) make small grants ($5,000) to demonstration sites to document “best practices” and exemplary programs; (2) develop talent bank and cadre of workshops, including the Alliance’s Kenai Institute; (3) develop a clearinghouse for information.
Audio-conference follow-up, hosted by ASCA

Purpose: to finalize recommendations from Summit in terms of specific projects.

Outcomes: Decision to focus on Summit recommendation #2 and collect data re: pre-service teacher training, inservice/professional development activities in districts, DOE teacher certification requirements, and consider workshop development models, such as Kennedy Center model. Discuss idea of workshop/institute/consortia models in the future.
Arts Ed Consortium Planning Meeting #1, hosted by ASCA, Anchorage

Purpose: to review professional development models (Writing Consortium, Quality Schools Institute, Partners in Education, Summer Acadmies) in terms of statewide sustainability and impact.

Outcomes: (1)Drafted definition/outline for three week summer institute; (2) identified 3 goals for an Action Plan – Teacher Training, Partnerships, Communications/Advocacy;(3) drafted goals for statewide arts ed initiative in terms of students, teachers, the state in general.
Arts Ed Consortium Planning Meeting #2, hosted by ASCA, Anchorage
January 25, 2002
Purpose: to produce specific, written goals for the emerging arts ed consortium that can be incorporated into National Endowment for the Arts reporting, revise the institute model draft, and review the draft of survey designed to go to all districts.
