UAS SUMMER Semester 2007
June 4-15, 2007 Three credit Earth System Science field methods course at UAS in Juneau, using GIS to map data collected from the ice surface to tidewater in the Mendenhall Glacier Valley. Fieldtrips include a helicopter trip to the Juneau Icefield and a raft trip down the Mendenhall River. Teachers will be loaned laptop computers, ArcGIS v. 9 software, digital cameras, and GPS receivers to use for creating quality Science Fair projects with students. Course instructors are geology professors Cathy Connor (UAS) and Anupma Prakash (UAF).
August 6 – 10, 2007. Teachers who attend the June Earth System Science field methods course select middle school and/or high school students to attend a UAS week long GIS and GPS data collection and map-making course in Juneau. Students will earn 2 college credits.
Fall Semester 2007
Teachers enroll in 3-credit distance Earth System Science Essentials geology course. This web-based and audio-conference course will provide science content for teachers and classroom support for ongoing student/teacher EDGE projects.
Spring Semester 2008.
March 2008. Students and teachers return to Juneau to present projects at the EDGE Symposium and attend the Southeast Regional Science Fair.
Tuition, travel, food, and lodging will be provided to participants through a grant from the National Science Foundation.
