| details | As you've likely heard by now, the CBJ is on Expensive back up diesel power for at least a few months after an avalanche wiped out a series of towers last week. The Chancellor is asking the UAS community to work without lights when possible, turn down your heat banks if your office is on electric heat and turn off computers after work and on weekends. Please see details below. Thank you to Joe Mueller, Facilities Services.
As a result of the recent loss of hydro generated electricity, a number of energy saving strategies have been discussed and/or implemented. In general these include;
- Eliminating use of electric heat where at all possible
- Minimizing to the extent possible run times of all major HVAC equipment
- Reducing interior and exterior lighting loads where possible
- Educating key staff to minimize large lighting loads when not needed ie Egan library
- Advising staff to reduce lighting loads when ambient light is available
- Lowering thermostat set points to reduce heating loads
- Reducing heating equipment redundancy, i.e., taking standby boilers off line now that the weather has warmed and building freeze ups are not a concern
- Minimizing the use of summer time air cooling equipment
- Minimizing the use of humidifiers serving the library collection
- Exploring BAS System capability/options for load shedding during peak demand
- Reducing the use of lab fume hoods where possible
- Avoid letting computers run 24/7 where not needed
- Exploring options to consolidate building usage
- Requesting folks be generally aware of and alert for any conservation opportunities
