Ph.D., London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London. Dr. Thomas specializes in American national and state politics (including Alaska politics), comparative politics and political philosophy, and is Statewide Coordinator of the Alaska Universities Legislative Internship Program.

Clive Thomas has taught political science at the UAS Juneau campus since 1980. Originally from England, he has lived in the United States since 1976 and has taught in Britain, Canada, and Belgium and lectured in several other countries including Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, South Africa, Norway, Denmark, and Germany. Since 1987, he has been the Statewide Director of the Alaska Universities Legislative Internship Program. He has worked as an intern in both houses of the U.S. Congress, worked as an aide in the Iowa Legislature, and has been a volunteer lobbyist. During 1997-98 and the summer of 2000, he was a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar in Brussels, Belgium. He received a Fulbright Senior Specialist Award to the Slovak Republic in 2004. And he received U.S. government grants to study interest groups in Latin America and in Eastern Europe during the summers of 2004 and 2005.

His teaching and research interests include: American politics, American state politics (especially Alaska politics and the politics of the American West), Western European politics, and particularly special interest groups. He has published ten books and over forty articles and chapters in books mainly in the fields of interest groups, state politics, legislative process, and intergovernmental relations. In addition, he has done extensive work over the past twenty-five years as a political consultant mainly through developing and conducting surveys for political candidates, advising various interest groups on strategy and tactics, and teaching seminars on lobbying and the legislative process.

His personal interests include railroads (so why is he living in Juneau?), hiking and camping, jogging and riding his bicycle. He is married to Susan Burke who is an attorney and a lobbyist. They have three cats—Reggie, Hamilton and Wellington.
