Uploading Camtasia Files to UASHome
- These instructions are assuming you have produced your presentation using
the Camtasia for RealPlayer format or as a Macromedia Flash movie.
The
files for streaming Camtasia presentations need to be placed in your UASHome
Web folder. For the Camtasia for RealPlayer presentations there are three
files to copy. The first file has an extension of .smil, the second has extension
.rm, and the third file has a .camv extension. All three of these files need
to be uploaded to the same folder for the video to play properly. If you
move any one of these files to a different location the presentation will
not play. It is recommended that a folder for the presentation be created
in the UASHome web folder and that the three files are all placed in this
folder.
For Macromedia movies you need to upload the html file produced by
Camtasia along with the folder of files produced bearing the same name.
The folder and the html file must be uploaded to the same directory for them
to work. Both the folder and html file must be uploaded for the movie to
play. It is recommended that you create a folder for the move and copy the
folder and file into it.
- A. On campus the easiest way to move the files to UASHome is to copy them
from the hard drive to a folder created for it in the z: drive.
- B. From off campus the best way to upload the files is to use an FTP client
such SmartFTP (free) which can be downloaded from the internet or from the
UAS Information CD that can be acquired from the Helpdesk.
Now that the files are placed in the proper location, a link to the .smil
file can be created in the course’s UASOnline Resources section.
- Go to the UASOnline site for the course for which the presentation was
prepared. Click on the Instructor Tools link at the top of the page then
the resources link on the page that opens. Another option is to click on
the edit link located in the References section itself.
- The Resources settings page shown below opens.

- Click on the Create New Link Button. Text boxes to enter the URL and title
for the link open as seen below.

- For Real player files enter the URL for the .smil file located in the UASHome
directory into the URL text box in the Add a Link Section of the Resources
dialog box. For Real Player to stream the video, the URL must be entered
as shown in the example below:
http://uashome.alaska.edu:8080/ramgen/your username/Web/filename.smil
For a Macromedia Flash movie enter the URL for the HTML file as shown below:
http://uashome.alaska.edu/~username/filename.htm
Type in the name for the presentation into the Title text box and click
the add button. The link will now appear in the Edit Links section of the
resource dialog box. It is not necessary to create links to the other files.
- The presentation is now linked to the UASOnline site for the course.
