1 . What does it cost to go to school?^

Costs vary according to class standing (i.e., whether you are taking lower division, upper division or graduate level courses), housing (on-campus, off-campus, or living with parents), which campus you attend, and the number of credits for which you register, among other factors. We have created cost of attendance budgets for typical categories of students. Expenses include university costs (tuition, fees, books and supplies) and other expenses (such as room, board, and transportation).

2 . What is the Estimated Family Contribution?^

The EFC is computed from information you put on your FAFSA. It is used to determine your eligibility for need-based financial aid. Although you can think of it as what the federal government has determined you and your family can contribute to the cost of your education, it is not necessarily what you have in a bank account, nor is it a balance you owe the university. You can obtain a low-cost Unsubsidized Stafford loan (one that is not based on financial need), even with a high EFC.

3 . When will my financial aid funds be disbursed?^

Funds will be disbursed on or after the first day of classes, if all other requirements are met. Check UAOnline or with the Financial Aid Office (907-796-6255 or 1-877-465-4827) to determine if everything is in order. See Disbursement Procedures for information on specific funding sources.

4 . How will my financial aid funds be disbursed?^

That depends on your funding source. If you have state or federal funding, your funds will likely be disbursed electronically to your student account. (If you chose a lender with whom we do not have an electronic funds transfer agreement, you may need to endorse a paper check). You will need to endorse checks from other funding agencies if they are made out to both you and the university. If a check is made payable to UAS, your funds will be applied against the charges on your student account. If you have more financial aid funds than university charges, a refund check will be issued to you.

Endorse checks and pick up refunds at the cashier's in the Novatney Building (907-796-6267), or at the Business Office ( Ketchikan 907-225-2256 and Sitka 907-747-6653).

See Disbursement Procedures for more information.

5 . Will my charges to the university for tuition, fees and books be paid for with my financial aid?^

Yes.

If you have more financial aid funds than university charges, we encourage you to sign up for direct deposit on UAOnline. Or, you can pick up a refund check at the cashier's office in the Novatney Building (907-796-6267), or at the Business Office ( Ketchikan 907-225-2256 and Sitka 907-747-6653). Contact the Financial Aid Office (907-796-6255), the cashier, or the Ketchikan/ Sitka Business Offices if you need to make arrangements to have your refund check mailed to you.

If your charges exceed your financial aid, you will be expected to pay the difference.

6 . The federal funding I applied for won't be enough. What do I do?^

There are several options:

7 . Will loans cover the entire cost of college?^

There are a number of types of financial aid, including grants and scholarships (which do not have to be repaid), student employment (or wages earned), and loans (which do need to be repaid). All of these can help you pay for your costs of attendance.

The amount of loan funding for which you are eligible may be a function of financial need, credit history, class standing, amount of other aid offered, and costs of attendance. There are a number of different loan sources, including federal loans, state loans, and alternative (or private) loans. You can use loan calculators and other available tools to determine what the monthly payments and accrued interest will be once you enter into repayment, and how much you can expect to earn upon graduation.

8 . How much can I get?^

If you are receiving financial aid from Federal or State sources, funds from all of your sources added together may not exceed the costs of your attendance. If you believe your costs are higher than our estimates, please provide documentation of your costs. We will revise your budget for your education-related expenses according to federal regulations.

The amount of funds you may receive from any single source may be a function of your class standing, how much you have already received, the total amount of loans you have borrowed, your credit history, or fund availability.

9 . If I'm going to be a teacher, can my loans be forgiven?^

Possibly. Check here for more information.

10 . Can I pay for my books with financial aid?^

With the exception of agency funded students, bookstore charges cannot be posted to student accounts against pending financial aid.
