Veterans' Benefits - Step by Step

Follow each step carefully. Also, take a look at the Department of Veterans Affairs instructions here.

Step 1
Decide on a program you would like to take

Step 2
Find out if the program is approved for VA benefits

Check with the Financial Aid Office about this.

Step 3
Complete the application and submit it to the appropriate VA regional office

Choose one that best sutes your situation:

  • If you have NEVER USED the GI Bill before
    fill out form 22-1990 (PDF | 470k; e-form)
  • You HAVE used the GI Bill Before
    fill out form 22-1995 (PDF | 21K)
  • You are a Survivor/Dependent
    fill out form 22-5490 (PDF | 42K)

If you are unable to print, you can call 1-800-GI-BILL-1 and have the forms mailed to you.
When you’ve completed the form and submitted it electronically, you must still print out the signature page and send it to VA. If you’re on active duty, your Education Services Officer must also sign your application.

Step 4
Ask the school or training official to certify your enrollment to VA

How long does it take to receive VA benefits?

It takes up to 12 weeks to process an enrollment, and they are processed in order they were received. If you try to log into the Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE) system and either cannot log in or see that your record has not been updated from last semester, we have not processed your paperwork yet.

What is accelerated payment?

An accelerated payment is a lump sum payment of 60% of tuition and fees for certain high cost, high tech programs.
