Application Procedures

1. Surf

It's a good idea to apply for several sources of financial aid. Often, a single source of funding will not meet all of your estimated costs of attendance. Review our Types of Financial Aid section for information about your aid options.

2. Apply for Federal Funds

We highly recommend that US citizens and eligible noncitizens begin by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), even if you also plan to apply for scholarships. FAFSA is the application for the need-based Pell Grant (which doesn't need to be repaid), as well as for the lowest cost student loans available.

Applying does not obligate you. If you receive an offer for loans, you are free to decline them. You are also free to accept previously declined loans later during a semester.

  • We recommend you apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN). The PIN functions to authenticate your identity. You can use it to easily renew your application each year, edit your current application online, and electronically sign your FAFSA and promissory notes for loans through most lenders online. Using the PIN is the fastest way to learn of the results of your application. However, it's not required. You may also submit the FAFSA electronically, but print out the signature page, sign it, and mail it in to the federal processor. Sending a paper FAFSA is yet another option, but you should expect about 6-8 weeks for it to process. If you had a PIN but lost it, you can apply for another. A parent can also apply for a PIN, which is useful if you need a parent's signature on your application and he or she lives in another state. After you've applied for a PIN, you will be emailed a link to a website where you can retrieve it within a couple of days.
  • To complete the FAFSA, you will need to include the University of Alaska Southeast's School or Title IV Code: 001065 . If you'd like to fill out the paper version before working on the on-line application, you can download one here.
3. Complete your application

Aftrer we hear back from the federal processor, we will either ask you to submit additional documentation to verify your FAFSA, or if no further information is needed, we will send you an award letter. The letter will detail your costs of attendance and the funding for which you are eligible.

4. Ensure you receive the results of your application

The UAS Financial Aid Office will correspond with you by email at the address you provide on your FAFSA application. We will correspond by mail if no email address is provided. After you register for your classes, you will be assigned a UAS student email address (see the Help Desk for more information). All further correspondence will be sent to that address.

5. Choose a lender

After applying for federal aid and recieving your award letter, you will next to select a lender (submit an application) to complete the loan process. Once you have chosen a lender please notify the UAS Finacial Aid office so your loans can be certified.

Inform the UAS Financial Aid Office if you prefer to use a different email address.
