National Science and Mathematics Access
to Retain Talent (SMART)
The National SMART Grant is a federal grant for junior and senior students. The program recognizes high-achieving Federal Pell Grant recipients majoring in specific areas of study (see below). Click here for additional information on SMART.
Details
- A student must be a U.S. citizen who has filed a FAFSA.
- A student must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant (and thus have an EFC of $3850 or less and be working on their first undergraduate degree).
- A student must be a third- or fourth-year, full-time, degree-seeking student.
- A student must be majoring in physical, life, or computer science; engineering; mathematics; technology; or a critical foreign language.
- A student must have at least a 3.0 GPA in their major field of study.
- Eligible students will be identified automatically by major.
- For the 2006-2007 academic year, $4000 is the maximum award for both third- and fourth-year students.
- The SMART Grant is a need-based award and thus counts towards fulfilling a student’s overall need figure.
