Welcome to UAS Health Services

Our Mission

The Student Health Service is here to support you in reaching your goals while at the University of Alaska Southeast, and beyond. The Health Center exists because the Chancellor, faculty, and staff recognize the critically important role that vitality and health play in gaining life long happiness and success.

UAS Health Center Clinician

Justine Emerson, Family Nurse Practitioner, is the clinician for the UAS Health Center. Justine has been a FNP for many years in Juneau and in many other settings. These include 4 1/2 years in Nepal where she did everything from pull teeth and cast fractures to teach health in maternal child clinics and science and health in a mud walled Nepali school. She has done short time medical work in Mongolia, Japan, Panama, Senegal and in many places in rural Alaska. Justine enjoys helping people be as healthy as they can.

Hours of Operation and Location

  • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday--8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, during the Fall and Spring semesters.

  • The Health Center is located downstairs in the Mourant Building

Clinic Visits

The eligibility requirements for students to be able to use the UAS Health Clinic are as follows:

  • Student is registered in 6 Juneau based credits, either on-campus or distance. Classes taken from other UAS/UA campuses do not count toward eligibility.
  • The only exception to this is UAA Social Work program students and UAF Fisheries program students who may voluntarily pay the fee and use the Health Center if they are taking at least 6 credits from any UA campus.
  • One of the above AND the student has paid $30 Health Center Fee. If the fee has not been paid but the student is in 6 or more Juneau credits they may go pay the fee at the Student Accounts office, return with their receipt (later with a sticker on their ID card) and we can then make them an appointment.
  • Student has not had more than six appointments with the clinic during current semester.
  • Student has not had 3 or more "No Show" appointments during current semester.

Note:  Questions concerning eligibility status should be referred to either the Dean of Students, Dr. Jessie Grant or Administrative Manager, Roxy Felkl.

Services Available at the UAS Health Clinic

General
  • Students can be seen for almost any illness or problem. This includes things such as acute minor illnesses, injuries, rashes, gynecological issues, depression, and chronic problems such as asthma etc. The Family Nurse Practitioner can diagnose, prescribe medication, or refer to a specialist, such as a psychiatrist or orthopedic physician, as needed.

  • Students may have as many free visits as they need during the year as long as they are registered for 6 credits.

  • A stock of basic medications is kept in the clinic, which includes things such as birth control pills and antibiotics. These are prescribed for the student as needed, but they must pay for them. They are sold at cost, which is generally 1/3 to 1/2 of the cost as a local pharmacy. Prescriptions can also be written for the student to fill at a local pharmacy or for the clinician to call or fax into one. The clinician can also help find medication assistance programs for students on long term medications who cannot afford them.
