Access to most University of Alaska systems is provided through a UA Username and password. The UA Username is accepted across the UA system and is generated automatically for every individual entered into the UA Student Information, Human Resources, or Finance system (Banner).

The use of Banner-generated UA Usernames ensure that computer accounts remain consistent as individuals change roles and move throughout the UA System.

University of Alaska Southeast Affiliate

UAS Student or Employee

Student accounts are available immediately upon registration in Banner for any UAS course. The accounts will remain active up to 8 weeks following the conclusion of the final course(s).

Employee accounts are immediately available once an employee has an active employee role or is designated as the instructor of record for any UAS course.  Employee accounts expire 4 weeks after an employee is terminated in the Banner system.

University of Alaska Affiliates

UAA/UAF/Statewide Affiliates

Affiliates with active accounts from other UA campuses can login immediately to UAS resources such as the computing labs and UASOnline.  No further action is necessary. Account expiration is managed by the user’s primary campus, MAU affiliation.

Guests or ”Sponsored” Access

Alumni & Friends, Conference Attendees, Contractors

Deans and Directors may request access to technology resources in support of a specific endeavor for a specific period of time.

At this time, Banner contains over a half-million accounts. These include current and former applicants, students, employees; and contractors.  If the individual is already in Banner, IT Services will simply activate the account by assigning a special role and expiration date.

If the individual is not yet in the Banner system, their information will need to be entered there in order to generate a UA Username. UAS Departments can contact either the Registrar or the Human Resource department in order to have an individual added to Banner.  Once this has been done, IT Services can activate the account immediately by assigning a special role and expiration date.

Password Changing Issues & Workarounds

Occasionally, when a you access UASOnline you will be informed that your password is about to expire, at which point you will be redirected to ELMO where you can change your password. This can cause you problems with connections to UAS services on your computer.

How to Avoid the Trap

If you are...

...logged on to a campus computer while on campus:

after changing your password, immediately log off of the computer and log back on using your new password.

...logged on to a campus laptop that is off-campus:

While off campus, continue using your old password to sign into the machine only (web-services will use the updated password.) When available, bring the computer back to campus and log on using your new password; this will update the cached account on the machine.

...using a personal computer on campus:

disconnect and re-add any shared drives or mapped printers using your new password.

Accounts are set to expire eight weeks after the last day of your courses with UAS. If you have not yet registered for the next semester, you'll want to review the following checklist to be sure everything is in order for your technology resources:

  • If you are continuing with school, register now!
  • If you are still working on this semester's coursework (incomplete, etc), talk with your academic advisor to prevent any activity lapses.
  • If you are done with school, register for an alumni account to keep your UAS account active.

Email

When you join the UAS Alumni & Friends Association, membership benefits include a free UAS Alumni email account. If you have a current UAS account, your access can continue with your UA Username. In the membership form, just be sure to check the 'Yes! Please set up my UASAA email account' box.

If your username has been inactive for an extended period of time (longer than one month) your previously stored email messages may have been cleared, so be sure to sign up today!

UASHome

You will want to clear out your UASHome space before leaving. You can either use a campus computer, or connect through FTP to download material to another location (CD, home computer, thumb drive, etc). If you need help connecting to your UAS Homespace from off campus, find more information here.

ePortfolio Access

Material that you have saved on your portfolio system will be available indefinitely. In order to retain access, you will need to join the UAS Alumni & Friends Association to continue using your present username.

The link to access your student portfolio is: http://uas.alaska.edu/online/portfolio/username (replace "username" with your username).

UAS students, staff, and faculty have an account on UAOnline (http://uaonline.alaska.edu). This resource allows you to register for classes, view your academic records, and apply for financial aid among other things.

Your User ID:

All staff, faculty, and students are issued an 8-digit User ID. If you forget your ID, you can look it up with ELMO. For the best results, choose option 3 and answer the roster of questions to get to your account information.

Your PIN:

Your PIN (Personal Identification Number) is a six-character password which was either issued to you at the beginning of your affiliation with the University or which you reset after your first time logging in to UAOnline.

For new students, employees, and those who requested a PIN reset:

You will have received your PIN in the mail after you were accepted to the University, began working for the University, or requested a reset. You can also obtain your PIN by logging in to ELMO, where this information will be available for 30 days.

After you login to UAOnline for the first time, or after a reset, you will be prompted to change your PIN. Your new PIN must be six characters and is case sensitive, alphanumeric, and can include spaces and punctuation. You may not use your date of birth.

If you have forgotten your PIN:

To reset your PIN, enter your User ID and leave the PIN field blank. Then click the Forgot PIN? button. You will then be prompted to answer the security question that you set up the first time you logged in to UAOnline. If you are not prompted with a security question or if you do not answer the question correctly, please contact us for help.

  • Students can contact the Helpdesk for UA Online issues. If you need your PIN reset and we are not available please contact Enrollment Services, the Registrar, or  the Admissions office.
  • UAS employees can contact the Helpdesk or their Human Resources office. UAF and Statewide employees should contact the OIT Support Center.

1. Do I have an account with UAS?

Your student account becomes available as soon as the registration process is completed. Please note that registration is considered "completed" when your information is entered into the University of Alaska's Banner Registration system - not when you submit your paperwork. This is true even if your application is submitted online.

To activate your new account you will need to find your username and set a password in ELMO (Easy Login Maintenance Option), also referred to as Login Help. While account activation allows immediate access to most UAS resources, it can take up to 24 hours for your class discussion boards to become available.

3. What is my UAS password

4. ELMO shows that my username is expired?

  1. Your account will expire if you stop taking classes for a semester or more. If you sign up for new classes your account will be reactivated when the registration process is completed. Please note that registration is considered "completed" when your information is entered into the University of Alaska's Banner Registration system - not when you submit your paperwork. However, if you register online as a previous student, account reactivation is immediate.
  2. If you believe your account should be active and ELMO shows it to be inactive, please contact the Helpdesk for assistance.

5. How do I reactivate my account?

Please note that registration is considered "completed" when your information is entered into UAS internal systems, not when you submit your paperwork. However, if you register online as a previous student, account reactivation will be immediate.
