Moving Files

In order to use your campus computer with your new account, you will need to transfer Documents & Settings from your old account, to your new account.

Precautions

Prior to the transition, you should consider the following.

Document Back-ups - Should an unlikely failure occur, your documents may be lost (there is only a slightly greater chance of this than through normal operations of your computer).  Here are some routine strategies to verify a copy exists of your documents.

  • If your computer sync's, right click on the My Documents folder and click Synchronize
  • Check the status of nightly back-ups, (this should indicate the last time your computer's My Documents was copied to a campus repository)
  • Copy critical documents to a department file share
  • Make a copy of the data to a CD/DVD or External Hard Drive.  (Please ensure that private/confidential data is kept in a secured location.)

Program Settings - Just as when another person logs in to your computer or your computer is rebuilt, most settings for your applications will not carry over to the new account.  For programs that you use frequently and have customized, please make notes or take screenshots of settings that you customize, so that you can apply them to your new account.

  • Email - Tools: Account Settings: Default Identity & Signature tags
  • Email - Address Book (try Exporting to an LDIF file)
  • Web Browsers - Bookmarks (try Exporting Firefox's bookmarks and copying your IE Favorites folder (C:\Documents and Settings\username\Favorites)
Printers - The printers that you use will in most cases not be available to your new account.  Please check the Start menu, under Printers & Faxes, and note the printers that you have previously added.  Also note your default printer, which will have a little check mark by it.  After the mover process, you may want to add these printers and set your default.

Perform the FileMover

When you feel confident to proceed, please follow the steps below.  Depending on the amount of data, the process may take some time.  Please plan for 30-60 minutes, during which your computer will be unavailable to use.

  1. If you have not previously, activate your UA Username through ELMO by setting the password to this account.
  2. Log off your computer
  3. Log in with your UA Username account. (This step creates your profile on the computer.)
  4. Start and log in to your email account through Thunderbird. (This stepcreates your Thunderbird profile.)
  5. Log off your computer again
  6. Log in with the File Mover account: Username = uasfiles & Password = moveme
  7. You will be prompted to sign in with your UA Username account, and confirm that you are ready to proceed (by checking boxes).
  8. A log will show the progress towards completion of the process and report any errors to you.  Please notify the Helpdesk of errors.
  9. You can now log in to your UA Username account!

Post-Transition Checklist

After completing the FileMover process, there will be a few steps for you to complete.

  1. Checking that your documents are accessible to your new account
  2. Reconfiguring program settings (as noted above)
  3. Re-add your printers (as noted above)
Note: Should you need to reference settings for a program, you can to log in to you old account on the computer and check previous program settings.  This will be possible until the old account expires.
