Single Sign-on - UAA & UAF Blackboard Systems

Status: UAA Students & Faculty can currently connect directly to UAA classes through the UAS Portal. UAF staff are currently testing the system. We anticipate access to their Blackboard system by the end of June.

Upgrade to Blackboard 9 Service Pack 8

Status: Installation date “to be determined.” UAS will be coordinating rollout of SP8 with UAA. The current plan is to upgrade the BBSANDBOX to SP8 in early Fall.  If UAS stakeholders are comfortable with the system, we plan to upgrade between Fall and Spring semesters.

Issue: Course Menu Disappears

Description: The ability to re-expand the course links tool bar on the left is no longer visible. 

Solution: The temporary solution is to restart the web browser. IT Services is working with Blackboard to identify a permanent fix.

Issue: Students cannot create new threads in Group Discussion Board Forums.

Description: When a Discussion Board is provided as Group tool, students are not able to create new threads in the default forum.

Solution: This is a known bug and will be addressed in a future upgrade.

As a workaround, instructors must edit each Group Discussion board and check the box next to "Allow members to create new threads" and then Submit. Within the Group tool, students can create their own forums and are not affected by “create new thread” bug.

Issue: Multiple YouTube Links

Description: Trying to embed more than one YouTube videos in Blackboard causes problems.

Solution: Check the option "use old embed code" when posting videos.

Issue: Sorting User List

Description: Instructors cannot sort by role on the users page in their Instructor area. This is a documented Blackboard issue that will be addressed when Service Pack 8 is deployed.

Issue:  Image Resizing

Description: It is highly recommended users resize their images BEFORE uploading to Blackboard. Blackboard offers a resizing tool however it does not reduce the file size (it resizes the on-screen view). Consequently, large images files can take a long time to display. Images should be resized to no larger than 400 pixels in either direction.

Issue:  Some External Links within Blackboard

Description: When you post an external link (like youtube) within the UAS Online/Blackboard frame, the link doesn't work. Users get the message that there is external content but it is blank below that. This is true of a number of external sites and it is often best to open them in a new window/tab. Letting students know that it will open in a new window/tab is also a good idea.

Solution: You will need to set the external link (YouTube, etc) to open in a new window.

Issue:  Mobile Device Support for Blackboard

Description: iPad/iPhone/iPod only supported from a wi-fi connection. Android/Blackberry only supported from a Sprint network. 

Solution: New Blackboard licensing model (available in September) will provide support for most mobile devices with no constraint on connection-type.

Issue:  Missing rows or columns in gradebook due to display settings

Symptom:  Either rows (student names) or columns (assignments) are missing from the gradebook when viewed from certain computers. The students are still seen on class roster and the missing assignments(columns) are set to be visible when you go to Manage and Column Organization in the gradebook. 

Cause:  Display settings - either extremely high resolution or font size set to 125% - caused the gradebook to display incorrectly.

Solution: Change system font size back to 100% and/or reduce screen resolution

Issue: Can't see the course links toolbar 

Description: When viewing Blackboard course sites, users are unable to see the course links tool bar on the left side of the screen.

Resolution: The tool bar is persistent and was hidden at some point.  Users can click the arrow on the left side to unhide the toolbar.

Issue: Browser "back" Button 

Description: Using the browser "back" button in some browsers causes the visitor to get redirected back to the UASOnlne. Update: Firefox will recognize the "back button" command and apply it to the active channel.  But IE doesn't appear to do so and kicks the user all the way back to UASOnline. This is a limitation of the browser and is related to the fact  Blackboard is encapsulated into a UASOnline channel.  

Resolution: Recommendation is to utilize the navigation icons (breadcrumb) provided in Blackboard to navigate back.

Resolved Issue: Guest Access Disabled

Description: When accessing a Blackboard site as a guest, users are able to open a document and subsequent attempts to access anything else results in a login page. If a content page has two images, the guests is provided a login page after the page loads.

Resolution: This is a confirmed Blackboard bug that causes guests to become de-authenticated when trying to access multiple resources.  We are waiting for a solution from Blackboard but in the meantime, we have developed a work around that utilizes a backend guest account for guest connections.
