Blackboard Learn is the course management system used by the University of Alaska Southeast to support face to face and distant courses.  UAS also uses Blackboard Collaborate (WebMeetings) to offer virtual classrooms. UA Southeast, UAA, & UAF use the came version of Blackboard Learn.

Courses can be accessed through the UAS Online Portal or through the single sign-in feature available at the top of any UAS webpage (see image below).

The following system requirements should be examined before accessing the UAS Southeast Blackboard Learn environment.  

  • Start by running the  browsers check to see whether Blackboard Learn supports your browser and operating system.
  • Pop-up Blocker: accessing Blackboard requires browser pop-up to be enabled. For support for pop-ups, please click here for support.

***External Resources: student support for external resources like textbook publishers, need to work directly with the services' technical support before contacting the UAS Helpdesk.

Current issues and relevant workarounds are listed below.

Error during Test and Quiz Submission

Description:

Students are unable to submit a quiz or test and receive an error indicating the submission is "Taking longer than expected for this stage." The submission is actually received, however, the item is placed into an "In Progress" state. The student receives no confirmation and is unable to submit again.


Work Around:

The faculty must manually submit the item for grading. To locate "In Progress" submissions...

Go to the Grade Center. Look for the blue pie chart icon.

Click the pull-down menu on the right of the icon.

Select "View Grade Details."

Click "View Attempts."

Click the down arrow next to “Test Information.”

Click “Submit Attempt.”

Drag and Drop Option does not Allow the Browser to Scroll

Description:

The browser fails to scroll when trying to Drag and Drop Announcement items or Grade Center columns.

Blackboard has confirmed this is a known issue.  A fix is not currently available.


Temporary Solution:

Manually scroll using the mouse, while holding down the left click.

Blackboard users cannot access various content and receives error...

Description:

Blackboard users cannot access various content and receive the error “The end instance must be greater or equal to the start.”


Status:

Blackboard has identified this as a known issue and solutions are being investigated.

Enabling Blackboard Pop-ups

Unable to open Blackboard window

Description:

 Users receive a warning message when accessing their Blackboard courses.  The message is titled “Unable to open Blackboard window” and is caused by the popup blocker detection.  


Solution:

Users can eliminate the message by adding a popup blocker exception for https://online.uas.alaska.edu. Click here for more info on how to add an exception.

Reordering Test Questions

Description:

After reordering test questions and saving the changes, the test questions revert back to their original position. This is typically caused by one of the questions which has either some erroneous HTML or special characters.


Work Around:

There are two ways to attempt to resolve the ordering problem:

1 Copy the exam by clicking on the circle menu next to the exam name:

Control Panel > Course Tools > Tests, Surveys, Pools > Tests

2 Edit each test question to locate the problematic one.

Inline Grading - Timeout

Description:

Inline grading uses a cloud-based service called Crocodoc.Sessions default to1 hour, so any annotations made after the session expires may not be saved.


Temporary Solution:

Navigate away from Grade Assignments to another Blackboard page. Returning to the grade assignment will create a new session.

Inline Grading - Comments

Description:

Comments added to an assignment when using Firefox (PC or Mac) disappear.


Temporary Solution:

Make sure "Comments and Markups" frame is open. Write a comment and click in the crocodoc frame. Comment is saved and added to the "Comment and Frame" LIS.

Update: “Access Denied” in Wiki Participation Summary

Description:

Instructor receives an “Access Denied” error message when attempting to access the drop-down for Display Pages from Wiki Participation Summary.


Status:

 Currently, there is no fix.

Unable to Upload Comments to Grade Center

Description:

From the “Work Offline” mode, unable to upload comments into the Grade Center. The grade is uploaded but the comment field remains blank.


Status:

 This is a confirmed bug. A fix is slated for release in October 2014.

Missing Grades in Grade Center

Description:

Instructors report grades are missing in the Grade Center for some students and random tests.


Status:

This is an unconfirmed bug. We have identified two possible workarounds to retrieve the missing grades:

1 Submit a request to IT Services to extract all grade log info for a specific assignments/test/quiz.

2 The instructor can manually view the missing grade by viewing the Grade History:

  • a. Go to the Grade Center
  • b. Find the student with the missing grade
  • c. In the cell (where the grade should appear), click the down-arrow and select, "View Grade Details"
  • d. Click "Grade History"

Edit Mode

Description:

If users have changed their Edit mode to On and their role changes the Edit mode changes to back to Off upon going back to the course.


Status:

 Issue is being investigated.

Description:

Unable to to copy and paste between tabs in Firefox and Chrome.

Past Issues (fixed)

Cannot Review Test Results

Description:

Students are unable to review the results after submitting a test. No response occurs when pressing the OK button.  The test settings are configured to open the test in a new browser window.


Status:

Issue is being investigated.  A work-around to view the results…Relaunch the test. Click  "View All Attempts."  Click the green checkmark to view the summary.

My Grades

Description:

Comments in feedback box spills out and may be hidden, resulting in an inability to see the complete comment.


Temporary Solution:

 Contact the Instructor or the UAS Helpdesk (796-6400) and ask to have the comment emailed to you.
