Policies for a
Closed Living Community
Solicitation
Solicitation is prohibited in UAS Student Housing. Solicitation includes the act of seeking by persuasion, entreaty, or formal application one’s audience, money, or influence. This may include door-to-door visitations by individuals selling merchandise, sharing religious or political beliefs, or requesting participation in surveys or petitions. This policy helps protect residents from unscrupulous persons selling magazines, presenting religious agendas, or seeking political support. It also protects the privacy and sanctity of the residents. Report any solicitation in Student Housing immediately to the Residence Life Office or to the CA on duty.
Any solicitation on campus for personal profit is not permitted. Solicitation for the benefit of a recognized organization on campus must be cleared through the Student Life Office. Anyone selling or soliciting on main campus must have a permit from the Student Life Office. Ask to see this permit before talking with any salespersons. If they do not have one in their possession, contact the Student Life Office immediately.
Visitors and Guests
Residents are welcome to invite visitors and guests to student housing. All visitors must be accompanied by a resident who is hosting them while they are present in student housing. Visitors may not loiter in lounges of Banfield or the Lodge unattended, and will be asked to leave. Residents are personally responsible for the actions of their guests and visitors. Visitors and guests to student housing are expected to abide by the university’s and department’s standards and may be asked to leave housing if they violate any of these standards.
Overnight Guests
Overnight guests may not remain on campus for more than three nights in succession without being registered at the Lodge Desk. Guest registration ensures that roommates and suitemates have all communicated about the guest’s extended stay and express their consent. Overnight guests may stay no more than seven days in a row in any month, or more than 20 nights in any semester.
At any time a roommate is uncomfortable with an unregistered guest staying in his or her living area, or if all roommates wish to terminate the registration of another roommate’s guests, the Residence Life staff will operate in favor of the residents, not the guest or the guest’s host. Long-term guests that have not been registered will be considered squatters, and the situations will be treated as such. If guests are parents, family, or friends above the age of 21, they may be able to rent any open apartments for a short period. To inquire about this possibility, contact the Conference Guest Services Coordinator. Temporary, overnight guest parking permits are available from the Residence Life Manager for up to seven days.
Cohabitation
Cohabitation of a resident with a member of the opposite sex is permitted as long as the other roommates of the suite or apartment are comfortable and happy with the arrangement. Especially for residents cohabitating with another UAS housing resident, an effort should be made to be courteous to roommates who may not be comfortable with members of the opposite sex (or the same sex) overnighting frequently in their living space. Essentially, the above Guest Policy will be enforced for those cohabitating if roommates express a dissatisfaction with having “additional roommate.”
Residents should not be expected to share their living space, bathroom, and privacy with a roommate’s significant other who does not pay rent for the unit, and they have the right to feel comfortable in their own home. Residents wishing to cohabitate regularly should investigate the qualifications needed to qualify for family housing or should consider cohabitating off-campus.
Criminal Trespass
The Residence Life Manager may serve a notice of criminal trespass to any resident or non-resident to prevent him or her from returning to the UAS Student Housing complex. Criminal trespass can be issued verbally and be held as legal notice for up to 24 hours until written notice can be provided to the offender. Once the individual has been served notice of criminal trespass, the university has received verification that the notification was delivered via certified mail, or the offender was witnessed to be approached with the notice but refused to sign it, his or her subsequent presence in student housing will warrant immediate notification of local police for arrest.
The Residence Life Manager may criminally trespass non-residents, or recently evicted residents who demonstrate repeated conduct or noncompliance issues, individuals stalking or harassing residents, or squatters and other violating the guest policy. Criminal trespass from UAS Student Housing prohibits individuals from being present in any facility or on the main grounds of the housing complex, on University Drive, in the parking lot, or on the paths between student housing and Mendenhall Loop Road, or between housing and the Student Recreation Center.
