Communication with Parents
NOTE: For the purpose of this statement, the word “parent” will also be interpreted to apply to guardians, or, in the case of international students, responsible agents.
The university views students as primarily responsible for the quality of their educational experience and the fulfillment of expectations that are accepted when enrollment is established at UAS. It also realizes the deep concern that parents hold for the total growth of a son or daughter and their normal progress through the university. In recognition of this interest, Residence Life Staff will assist parents in making contact with their son or daughter by delivering messages and verbally reminding residents to call home.
However, under rights granted to the adult student by FERPA, university officials cannot provide parents or other family members with any information from student records, including disciplinary files, unless the student has signed a waiver permitting open communication with parents or if the student’s personal safety and wellness is in jeopardy. This decision will be made at the discretion of administrators of the university with due cause.
When deemed desirable, a representative of the university will also communicate with parents in relation to the following circumstances:

- The resident is under the age of 18
- Medical or psychiatric hospitalization or emergencies, including suicide attempts
- Violation of a Residence Life policy or regulation related to personal health risks or chronic wellness concerns and any subsequent judicial decision. This can include drug use, violence and threats towards self or others, repeated alcohol violations of those under the age of 21, or significant self-destructive risk behaviors.
- Absence from the campus when there is reason to be concerned for the student’s well-being because the student’s whereabouts are unknown.
