Firearms and Weapons Policies
UAS is a hunter-friendly campus, meaning it provides guidelines by which residential students can register and secure their hunting firearms and weapons on campus through a meticulous security process. However, it is against state law for students or staff to be in possession of weapons on campus, including in their vehicles, so the utmost attention to these guidelines must be observed.
The possession of concealed handguns is strictly prohibited on University premises. The possession of firearms, explosives, and/or prohibited weapons is also prohibited by authority of the University of Alaska Board of Regents pursuant to A.S. 14.40.170 and 18.65.755 except as expressly authorized by University regulation.
Additionally, though a student may hold an approved concealed handgun permit from another location, the City of Juneau does not permit anyone to carry a concealed handgun.
Prohibited weapons include:
- Firearms
- Paintball guns, air guns, pellet guns, tranquilizer guns
- Ammunition
- Knives and blades longer than 2.5 inches that were not designed for kitchen use
- Martial arts weapons and swords
- Crossbows and similar hunting implements
- Tasers or stun guns
- Explosives or incendiary devices
- Semi-automatic weapons
- Other objects commonly understood to be designed as a weapon or hunting instrument
Severe and immediate disciplinary action will be taken against any student found to be in possession of prohibited weapons on campus, up to or including steep fines, eviction, expulsion from the university, or legal action.
At no time can fireworks, explosives, or semi-automatic firearms be brought to campus.
Hunting weapons and ammunition, recreational firearms, martial arts weapons, and decorative weapons can be secured in weapons lockers in the Lodge. Any weapon not listed above must be approved by the Residence Life Manager for storage before it is brought to campus. Only a limited number of weapons lockers are available and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Incoming residents are strongly encouraged to call the Residence Life Manager prior to arriving on campus to reserve a locker.
Weapons Locker
A proper weapons registration form and a weapons agreement must be completed and submitted to the Residence Life Manager as soon as the student arrives on campus with the approved weapon. The weapon must immediately be brought to secured weapons storage so that it does not stay in student possession at any time. Students who are assigned a weapons locker must provide their own heavy duty key-operated padlock. Combination locks or small padlocks are not acceptable. Residents who arrive with a weapon but an insufficient padlock will be forced to leave campus with the weapon at once. Each locker is equipped with two padlock hatches; one lock is provided by the student and the other is provided by the university. This system requires both parties to be present to open the locker so that neither can access it on his or her own. Students are limited in the number or type of weapon they may keep in student housing only by the size of the locker. In the case that a gun case does not fit into the locker, the resident will be required to remove the firearm and to store it in the locker without the case. Empty gun cases may be stored in student residences. Lockers may not be shared by more than one individual except by household members of the same family unit.
Students can gain access to their weapons locker by requesting it from the Security Officer, a Residence Coordinator, or the Residence Life Manager. Access is not guaranteed with less than 24 hours notice. Students wishing to check out their weapon in the early hours or late hours should arrange an appointment in advance, as staff should not be expected to respond to untimely requests with no notice. Only the owner can gain access to the locker. When a weapon is checked out, a checkout form must be completed.
The student must estimate a time when he or she plans to return to campus with the weapon. Once weapon is checked out, it must be immediately removed from campus. It may not be placed in a vehicle while the student returns to his/her room to get additional supplies. Likewise, the weapon must immediately be checked in as soon as the student returns to campus. Improper or untimely return of checked-out weapons may result in room searches or reports to the police.
Students may make an appointment in advance to clean their firearms. This will be permitted only in the Lodge commons when a professional staff member is present. The student will be required to show that the weapon is empty of any ammunition and that the owner is not in possession of any ammunition.
Unclaimed weapons left in lockers after the student has checked out of housing, or weapons found to be in unauthorized locations on campus will be turned over to the police immediately.
Formal termination of a weapons agreement must be conducted if a weapon is to be permanently removed from campus. The ability to secure recreational weapons on campus is a privilege that is rarely provided on college campuses. Inability or unwillingness to abide by the weapons policy will result in this privilege being revoked, or more severe action.
Fireworks
The possession of fireworks, firecrackers, and/or other incendiary devices are prohibited. Anyone found detonating fireworks of any type on campus will be subject to a $100 fine and disciplinary action.
