8:00AM - Personal Watercraft Safety Training
Personal Watercraft Safety Training
The CBJ Parks and Recreation Department is partnering with the U.S. Coast Guard and the American Watercraft Association (AWA) to host a free two-day open water personal watercraft safety training at Auke Lake. The course will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1. Space is limited and registration is open to everyone. The course is being offered at no cost thanks to the generous support of AWA. The course will be led by Shawn Alladio, Lead Instructor for K38 Water Safety. K38 Water Safety provides training to recreational boaters, government agencies, and search and rescue organizations around the world. Shawn was certified as a National Safe Boating Council Instructor in 1997, and has received numerous awards from the National Safe Boating Council, National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, and the National Water Safety Congress. In 2011 she was inducted into the NSBC Boating Safety Hall of Fame. The course will focus on safe operation of personal watercraft, also known as jet skis™. The weekend will include classroom presentations at the University of Alaska’s Auke Lake Campus, as well as hands-on training at Auke Lake. Participants are encouraged to bring their own vessels and required safety gear to the training; all motorized vessels using Auke Lake must display a current Alaska registration. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is free, and space is limited. To register, please call CBJ Parks & Recreation at 586-5226, or stop by the Parks & Recreation office located in City Hall at 155 S. Seward Street.
