The University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan campus Science Department offers courses that support degree programs including General Education Requirements in Biology, Chemistry, Natural Science and Oceanography.    

The department prepares students in the nursing programs, the associate of arts program, the associate of applied science program and the bachelor of liberal arts program.    

Regular courses offered include Biology 103 - Biology and Society, Biology 104 - Natural History of Alaska, Biology 111 - Human Anatomy & Physiology I, Biology 112 - Human Anatomy & Physiology II, Chemistry 103 - Introduction to General Chemistry and Chemistry 104 - A Survey of Organic & Biochemistry.   

In addition special classes are offered including Fundamentals of Histology.

Dr. Houtcooper holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Natural Science, a Master of Arts in Life Sciences (Vertebrate Ecology) and a Ph.D. in Life Sciences (Vertebrate Ecology).  His accomplishments & honors include:

• Former Environmental Senior Scientist, State of South Dakota , Department of Environment and Natural Resources
• Director and Chief Zoologist, South Dakota Natural Heritage Program, The Nature Conservancy
• Chief Zoologist, Kentucky Nature Preserves Commission, Frankfort , Kentucky
• Assistant Professor of Biology, Aquinas College , Grand Rapids , Michigan
• Life Member, American Society of Mammalogists
• Served as editor and reviewer for scientific journals
• Published 25 + scientific papers and articles
• Published 25 + papers and articles
